Google Reviews for Syrian Businesses: Getting Your First 20

Short answer

Your first Google reviews matter most because they turn an unknown pin into a business people trust, and reviews are widely understood to be one of the strongest local ranking factors on Google Maps. Ask every customer honestly, make it easy with a WhatsApp message and a QR card on the counter, reply to every review, and never buy, fake or pay for them.

Key takeaways

  • The jump from zero reviews to a handful is the biggest jump in customer trust.
  • Twenty is a practical first goal, not a magic number set by Google.
  • Ask everyone, not only happy customers, and make it a one-tap link.
  • Reply to every review, especially the bad ones, calmly and briefly.
  • Fake, bought or rewarded reviews break Google's policies and can backfire.

Why the first 20 reviews matter

Imagine a customer looking at two bakeries on Google Maps, a few streets apart in Al-Ghouta. One has no reviews. The other has 23, mostly good, with replies from the owner. Most people will walk to the second one without thinking twice. Reviews are the closest thing the internet has to word of mouth.

They also matter to Google. Reviews are widely understood to be one of the strongest factors in which businesses appear in local results: how many you have, how recent they are, the overall rating, and whether you reply. Read more about this in our post on how local search works in Homs.

Why 20? It is not a number Google publishes. It is a practical first target: enough for a customer to see a pattern rather than one person's opinion, and small enough for a shop to reach in a few weeks by asking consistently. After that, the goal is a steady flow, because a profile whose newest review is two years old looks closed.

When and whom to ask

The best moment is right after a good experience: when the car is handed back running smoothly, when the cake is collected, when a patient thanks the doctor. Regular customers who already like you are often happy to help if you simply ask.

Ask everyone, not only the people you expect to be happy. Google's policies do not allow businesses to selectively ask only satisfied customers or to discourage negative reviews. Honest asking also protects you: a profile full of only five-star reviews can look less believable than one with a few honest fours.

Inside your Google Business Profile there is an option to ask for reviews, which gives you a short link that opens the review box directly. Copy it and save it somewhere you can reach in two seconds. The easiest place is a quick reply in WhatsApp Business, so typing a shortcut like /review pastes the whole message. Our WhatsApp Business guide shows how to set quick replies up.

A WhatsApp message you can copy

Send it the same day, while the visit is fresh. Keep it short, personal and neutral: ask for an honest opinion, not a five-star rating.

English:

Hi [name], thank you for visiting [shop name] today. Your honest opinion helps us a lot. If you have a minute, you can leave a short Google review here: [review link]. Thank you!

Send it once. If they do not leave a review, do not chase them with reminders.

A QR card on the counter

Not every customer is in your WhatsApp. For walk-in customers, print a small card with a QR code that opens your review link.

  • Put a clear line on it in both languages: "قيّمنا على Google" and "Review us on Google".
  • Add one sentence: "Scan with your phone camera, it takes one minute."
  • Place it where people wait or pay: the counter, the cashier, the waiting chairs in a clinic.
  • Print a smaller version on receipts, menus, business cards or delivery bags.
  • Make the QR code at least 3 cm wide and test it on two or three different phones before printing a batch.

Staff should mention it in person too: "If you liked it, the card is right there." A card alone gets ignored; a card plus a sentence works far better.

Reply to every review

Replies show future customers that someone is listening. For good reviews, thank the person by name, mention something specific, and keep it to two lines. Reply in the language they wrote in.

Bad reviews feel personal, but they are also your best chance to show how you treat people. A good reply:

  1. Waits until you are calm, but not more than a day or two.
  2. Thanks them and acknowledges the problem without arguing.
  3. Gives a short, honest explanation only if it helps.
  4. Moves the conversation to WhatsApp to fix it privately.
  5. Never shares private details such as phone numbers, prices they paid or medical information.

Example: "Thank you for telling us, Ahmad. We are sorry the order was late on Friday. That is not how we want to serve you. Please message us on WhatsApp so we can make it right." If the problem is genuinely fixed, some customers update their review on their own.

If a review is fake, abusive or clearly about another business, you can report it from your profile. Google decides whether to remove it, so reply politely in the meantime.

What not to do

  • Do not buy reviews. Paid review services break Google's policies, and the reviews often come from accounts that look obviously fake.
  • Do not write your own, or ask staff and family to post reviews as if they were customers.
  • Do not offer incentives such as a discount, a free drink or a raffle entry in exchange for a review. Google's policies prohibit this, even for honest reviews.
  • Do not ask only happy customers or filter people before sending the link.
  • Do not trade reviews with the shop next door.
  • Do not argue in public or threaten a reviewer.

Google can remove reviews that break its rules and may restrict profiles that keep breaking them. Even when nothing happens, customers in a city like Homs talk, and a reputation for fake reviews is hard to undo.

Start collecting reviews properly

Reviews only work if your Google profile is set up correctly first. Both HomsWeb products include Google Business Profile setup, and we can help you prepare your review link and message. See what HomsWeb does for businesses, read our Google Business Profile guide, or message Mahmoud on WhatsApp.

Common questions

Can I give customers a discount for leaving a review?

No. Google's policies prohibit offering incentives in exchange for reviews, even honest ones. Ask politely and make it easy instead.

Can I delete a bad review?

You cannot delete reviews yourself. You can report reviews that break Google's policies, and Google decides. For genuine complaints, a calm public reply and a private fix usually help more.

How fast should I reply to reviews?

Within a day or two is a good habit. Quick, short replies show customers that the business is active and listening.
